The gap between what AI can do and what businesses actually need it for is wider than you think.

Why Most SMBs Get AI Wrong
Every week I talk to business owners who want AI. Most of them are thinking about it wrong.
They come in wanting a chatbot. Or "something with ChatGPT." Or they read an article about AI agents and now they want one of those.
The problem isn't ambition. It's starting from the technology instead of the problem.
Start With the Bottleneck
The best AI implementations I've seen didn't start with AI at all. They started with someone saying "this process takes us 40 hours a week and it shouldn't."
Or "we lose 30% of leads because nobody follows up within 24 hours."
Or "our team spends half their day copying data between three systems."
That's where AI earns its keep. Not as a feature. As a fix for something that's actively costing you money or time.
The Framework
Before you spend a dollar on AI, answer these:
What's the most painful manual process in your business right now?
What does it cost you in hours, dollars, or missed opportunities?
If that process ran itself, what would your team do with the freed-up time?
If you can't answer those clearly, you're not ready for AI. You're ready for a whiteboard session.
The Punchline
AI isn't magic. It's leverage. And leverage only works if you know what you're trying to move.
